The Monon Trail follows the abandoned rail bed of the Indianapolis, Delphi & Chicago Railroad Company organized in 1869.
The Chicago & Indianapolis Air Line Railroad Company purchased
the stock of the original company in March, 1881. It was later absorbed by the Louisville,
New Albany & Chicago Railroad formerly known as New Albany
& Salem Railroad the
first railroad in Indiana.
This entire rail organization became known as the Monon because its 2 main lines, Michigan City to Louisville and Chicago to Indianapolis, crossed at Monon, Indiana.
